World champion from the Jeugdtour

garnerAt the world championships in Copenhagen riders we know from the European Junior Cycling Tour Assen showed themselves. Highlight was of course the world title of Lucy Garner in the junior-women category. Lucy has been racing in Assen for years but was particularly succesful in the recent two years. In 2011 she won the criterium on Tuesday, the Omloop on Friday and the Criterium on Saturday. In 2010 she won the overall classification in the nieuwelingen-girls category. Lucy is only a first-year junior so we hope to see her again in Assen next year.

Christina Siggaard was third in that race. She was the winner of the overall classification in 2010 but couldn't compete this year because of an injury. Nina Nielsen, Julie Lykke and Fie Degn Larsen were also part of the Danish selection. Read more about their road to Copenhagen in our archive.

Jonathan Dibben got a great eight place in the time trial. Owain Doull, Assen participant in 2009 was also part of the British selection. The highlight for Team GB was of course the world title of Mark Cavendish who also once sprinted on the roads of Assen.

The Dutch gained a bronze medal with Steven Lammertink who won the overall in 2009 in the strong U17-category. Marianne Vos got her fifth consecutive silver medal but vowed to take revenge next year in Valkenburg.

A lot of riders who represented their country in Copenhagen, were part of the European Junior Cycling Tour. We obviously forgetting some names like Karen Elzing. As organization and sponsors we are very proud of the talented riders "coming from Assen."

Energiewacht continues sponsorship

Hindrik Aalders from event sponsor Energiewacht spoke some words at the closing ceremony. He had very good news for the organization because Energiewacht will continue its sponsorship for the next three years. Energiewacht looks for energy and youth cycling has plenty of that. “Cyclists understand the importance of sponsors. I don’t know any other sport in which they straighten their shirts to show the sponsor. Energiewacht appreciates that and that’s why we like sponsoring cycling,” Hindrik explained.

Gordon's Dream Team

AussieAt the beginning of the 47th Jeugdtour we introduced you to the Australian boys Brendon, Luke, Jai and Robert. After a week of racing on Dutch soil we asked them, coach Gordon and mum Ann about their experiences.

"It has been a great week of racing," Luke says. "The nieuwelingen peloton is so big and the pace is high. In Australia we don't even have these big pelotons at the nationals." Ann adds: "All money goes to track cycling in Australia, not to road races."

Coach Gordon: "The entire week was perfectly organized and everone is so kind here. The most important lesson for our boys has been that there is real racing here. Back home they just watch each other the entire race and then prepare a sprint in the final. Here they just go straight from the start."
